Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolf

Welcome back, my Lovely Readers! I grew up watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I aspired to be Jessica one day, and to have a love like Roger and Jessica. It took me until I was an adult before I got around to reading the source material. In the aftermath of Beauty School, I sat and stared at the walls a lot. I had no direction anymore. My brilliant hubby handed me a paperback copy of Who Censored Roger Rabbit one day on his way out the door, telling me to read. Like a raft in the sea, this book helped me transition from one routine to another.

Who Censored Roger Rabbit is a noir crime novel set in a version of old time Hollywood with living cartoons. That is about all that the movie kept. I honestly suggest reading the novel for its differences. Jessica is a victim of date *ape and that is sad. Our Toon characters speak with speech ballons, and there's just enough unexplainable magic to make old Walt Disney a happy man

It's a great example of noir fiction in the vein of the Maltese Falcon, and i loved it. I gushed to Author Gary K. Wolf on Messenger soon after reading it and he was kind enough to sign my beat up old second hand paperback, and Roger signed it, too. This is one of my most prized possessions.  

I feel like Im really not doing this inventive mystery justice. If you're a noir fan you really have to give it a go

Darkness Take my Hand by Dennis LeHane

Kenzir and Genarro #2 Review by Elleanore G. Vance  Angie has left Phil, and Patrick is dating a medical resident who has a young daughter. The pair still work out of offices in the church belfry, but the prologue tells us after the book ends it has become covered in dust. Our story starts when the phone rings. A woman who knows a school chum of the detectives' is calling for help with these anonymous threats she's recieving. After the initial interview, Patrick and Angie do all the usual flatfoot type work, including a covert follow operation, turning up nothing. We find out Angie is connected to the mafia and she doesnt want to use that connection.  When they don't find anything, the pair and their client decide it's pointless to continue to waste money when no credible threat can be found.   And then a body is found having been crucified.   That changes the whole damn game.  Patrick does an about face from the last book as a womanizer to a faithfu...

Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys

A Review by Elleanore Vance  This past January (2021) when the skies were grey and the temps were low, I wanted a book to match. Winter Tide was very much that.  A sequel to an online fan fiction called The Litany of Earth ,  this novel fleshed out what Litany left bone. To know what's what,  i highly suggest reading Lovecraft's Shadow over Innsmouth first.  I suppose you might be able to follow what's going on without it,  but having the background makes it so much easier.  Ruthanna Emrys chose a pair of siblings from Innsmouth as her protagonists: the only known survivors of the Marsh family. Aphra, the elder,  and Caleb her younger brother,  who was so young when their family was incarcerated that all his childhood memories are from the camps.  They survived the internment camps that killed their natal family, and manage to build a new one when they are joined by Japanese Americans,  held against their will,  during WWII...
