The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie

Welcome back, my Lovely Readers! This month we're looking at a classic from the Queen of Crime: Dame Agatha Christie. That essential intelligence thriller: The Secret Adversary.

In the aftermath of the First World War and the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, we find Tommy Beresford, and his childhood friend Prudence  "Tuppence" Cowley looking for work.

Both have done their service for King and Country, but now, the city offers no employment, and neither foes anywhere else. Penniless and desperate, having tried all of the legal ways to get ahead, the pair decide to try some less legal, morally grey ways. So begins the Young Adventurers Limited.

One of the world's first spy novels, this is my favorite set of Christie characters. The intrepid Young Adventurers end up on the trail of a missing woman who had some very important papers on her when she disappeared. A case of mistaken identity opens new avenues of investigation, but will they be able to solve all of the riddles and get the mysterious documents back in time?

I really cannot recommend this classic bit of literature highly enough. Please consider this your engraved invitation to London in 1922 to meet Tommy and Tuppence

The Fairy Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley

Review by Elleanore G. Vance Are you a Nursery Crimes reader? Did you follow the Beaudelairs on their Series of Unfortunate Events? Do you love Fairy Tales? Then i have a book for you! The first in the Sisters Grimm mysteries containing nine stories in all, we meet Sabrina (11) and Daphne (7) Grimm. They were orphaned last year and since have been kicked around to several very unsuitable foster homes. As far as they or anyone else knows, they are all alone in the world.   Imagine their surprise to be told a woman they have never met is claiming to be their Granny Relda, someone the girls believed to be dead, shows up to take them home. The authorities don't really care, they just want the Grimm Girls out of their hair. So the Sisters' new home is Ferryport Landing, New York with "Granny" Relda and Mr. Canis, her helper.   The girls' reactions are totally understandable and relateable. The Slleping Lady by Robert Graysmith

Review by Elleanore G . Vance In the United States the years before the internet and DNA evidence had quite a few serial murderers, each with his or her own specific pattern. Some killed for decades, others racked up a huge body count in a surprisingly short period of time. Between 1979 and 1981, an unassuming middle-aged man joined the ranks of Jeffrey Dahmer, Dennis Rader, and Roger Kibbe. This is the story of David Carpenter, largely known as the Trailside Killer, and his victims proven and alleged. From the author of the notorious Zodiac book, former cartoonist of the SF Chronicle, we meet the victims,and find them scattered like forgotten toys all over Mount Tamalpais. It is my belief that Mr. Graysmith was present at both trials. The amount of detail is amazing,  even if it brings to mind the Conspiracy Guy meme.
